As a member of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), US Lacrosse, the national governing body of lacrosse, supports the participation of a U.S. team in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships and has named US Indoor Lacrosse (USIL Inc.) as the organization to manage, fund, operate, and coach the 2011 team.
US Indoor Lacrosse coordinates all aspects of the Indoor National teams. The Men’s U.S. indoor team has competed in sanctioned world championships through the Federation of International Lacrosse. The FIL was formed in 2008, following a merger of the International Lacrosse Federation and the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations.
The inaugural World Indoor Lacrosse Championship (WILC) was held in Hamilton, Kitchener, Mississauga, and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada in May 2003. National teams from Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, the Iroquois Nation, Scotland and the United States participated. Canada defeated the Iroquois Nation in the final by a score of 21-4. The World Indoor Lacrosse Championship was sponsored by the International Lacrosse Federation through 2007, and will be sponsored in the future by the sport’s new unified governing body, the Federation of International Lacrosse.
The U.S. indoor team program has three primary teams:
• Team USA or the U.S. Men’s Indoor Team (selected every four years).
• The U.S. Development Team (selected annually)
• The U.S. Junior Team (selected annually).
The Men’s USA Indoor team is the only Indoor Lacrosse program recognized by the FIL currently.
