The North American Lacrosse League will host the 2011 National Draft on Sunday, December 11, 2011. Each of the NALL’s five teams will select players in the draft, which will be held in conjunction with the fifth annual USIL National Combine on December 10, at SportsQuest Indoor Sports Center in Richmond.

“The National Draft is a significant moment in the young history of the NALL,” said Tony Caruso, the league’s Commissioner. “We’re very excited to hold our draft in conjunction with the USIL National Combine, which will give our teams’ coaches, GM’s and scouts the opportunity to evaluate and get to know players before they begin building their rosters.”

The combine, which features agility testing, indoor lacrosse drills, scrimmage play and an invitational Pro-Am game.  All events will be in front of pro GM’s and scouts from each of the five North American Lacrosse League teams — the Charlotte Copperheads, Hershey Haymakers, Jacksonville Bullies, Kentucky Stickhorses, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Shamrocks.

NALL teams began building their rosters in October’s College Draft, and a handful of others were signed early as Franchise Players, but a majority of NALL players will enter the league through the National Draft. Any lacrosse player deemed of professional caliber is eligible for the National Draft and USIL National Combine.

Jacksonville Bullies Head Coach Brian Duncan and staff will be in attendance, “We are excited to see what players are available to us in the state of Florida” commented Duncan.  “US Indoor Lacrosse does a fantastic job of educating and running a combine that allows our teams to evaluate talent” Although Saturday’s event will be conducted primarily for the Jacksonville franchise, other NALL teams will be in attendance.

Five regional combines are being held in the United States in
anticipation of the USIL National Combine and NALL Entry Draft on December 10-11 in Richmond, Virginia.  The first combine was held on October 8th in Bucksmont, PA.  Combine participant Brian Caufield (University at Albany) was selected 3rd overall in the NALL’s inaugural College Draft as a result.  The Jacksonville Bullies will compete in a 12-game schedule, playing home games in Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena – Jacksonville, FL., starting in January 2012.

Hershey Haymakers Head Coach Hunter Francis and staff will be in attendance, “The Hershey Haymakers are excited to host our combine this Saturday at Myers Pavilion. We are looking forward to 25 to 30 ambitious players taking their first step towards playing in the NALL” commented Francis.  “The combines are expertly run by Team USA General Manager Graham D’Alvia and Head Coach Tom Ryan. This is a great opportunity to watch future talent in an environment that stresses teaching the game and tough, competent play.” Although Saturday’s event will be conducted primarily for the Hershey franchise, other NALL teams will be in attendance. The Iroquois Nationals edged a young Team USA to capture their second straight win over the Americans. Cody Jamieson (3+2), Brett Bucktooth (3+1) and Gewas Schindler (two goals, plus game-winner) had big games for the Nationals.

United States got stellar efforts from Joe Walter (2+6), Grant Catalino (4+1) and Greg Rogowski (3+1). The Americans were one quarter away from winning their second straight Cup after rallying to take a 12-11 lead into the final quarter. Bucktooth, however, erased the US lead with consecutive goals and a 13-12 lead and Schindler scored an insurance goal at 10:45, which proved to be the game-winner. Catalino’s fourth of the game set the stage for last-second drama as he connected with 27.2 to play. The US had three opportunities to tie the game but goalie Jeff Powless made two huge saves in the final seconds.

The Iroquois opened the scoring as Tyler Hill scored from left-wing side for a 1-0 Nationals lead at 1:05. The US answered quickly on the power play with a marker from NLL rookie Catalino. Dan Hardy (2+2) and Walters assisted on the goal at 1:54. Hill helped the Nationals regain the lead at 2:37, but once again the Americans were quick to counter. Hardy from Walters made it 2-2 at 3:10. Jamieson netted two highlight reel goals as the Nationals built a 5-3 lead. The Americans responded with a diving goal by Rogowski and Catalino’s second of the night with 0.5 seconds to play.

The Americans continued the momentum into the second with goals by Joel White, Max Seibald and Ethan Farrell to take an 8-6 lead at 2:26. Not to be outdone, the Iroquois roared back with a pretty breakaway goal by Jeremy Thompson and an “Air Gait” impersonation by Jamieson for his third of the game at 3:23. Rogowski restored order for the US with his second of the contest as the Americans took a 9-8 lead. Yet, the Nats scored the last two goals of the quarter to pull ahead 10-9 after the first half.

Nationals took an 11-9 lead on goal by Schindler with Jamieson and Blue Hill assisting at 9:54. Walters then answered with his second of the game at 10:26 on a great individual effort to get to the cage. His sixth point of the game cut the Iroquois lead to 11-10. Catalino tied the game at 11 with his third of the game at 11:07 time of the goal. Rogowski assisted and then tallied his third of the game to give the US a 12-11 advantage. Walters and Deckelbaum assisted.

After three straight Nationals goals in the fourth, Catalino cut the deficit to 14-13 with 27.2 to play. The Americans swarmed the Iroquois’ goal, but Powless made key saves to preserve the win. Jake Henhawk played two-plus quarters and allowed six goals for the US, while Ginny Capicchioni played over 20 minutes to start the game. Angus Goodleaf started the game for the Iroquois, who took a 10-9 lead into halftime.
